  1. Hello and Welcome to the Bard's Tale Construction Set v1.3!

  3. After UNZIPing the NUBTCS.ZIP file, you should have the following
  4. files:
  5.  
  6.     README.DOC (You're looking at it now)
  7.     EXE.ZIP
  8.     SOUNDS.ZIP
  9.  
  10. You need to UNZIP the EXE.ZIP file into your \BTCS directory (it contains
  11. files that replace your original BTCS.EXE and BARDGAME.EXE, and so on).
  12. You will then need to UNZIP the SOUNDS.ZIP file into your \BTCS\SOUNDS
  13. directory (it contains Sound Blaster stuff, mostly).
  14.  
  15. After that, you should look over the rest of this README file, it shows
  16. you what has changed since the last version of BTCS.
  17.  
  18. If you have any problems, you can reach Interplay at the usual places
  19. (most likely where you got this upgrade).  But for safe measure:

  48. Version 1.1 of BTCS features the following improvements:
  49. --------------------------------------------------------
  50. 1)  The  10 Second delay during treasure screen has been replaced
  51.     by a "<MORE>" prompt.
  52. 2)  Options are displayed at the end of viewmode to provide a way
  53.     to page through all character info again.
  54. 3)  The palette is now  correct  when teleporting from one map to
  55.     another.
  56. 4)  Teleport now works with directional controls.
  57. 5)  Save game  no longer  un-equipps  all items before saving the
  58.     characters.
  59. 6)  Scroll speed is adjustable from virtually anywhere in the
  60.     game. Also, the scroll rate is adjustable to a VERY slow rate
  61.     to accomadate faster  machines and systems with VGA graphics.
  62. 7)  "Updating Character Info" messages are gone.
  63. 8)  7th level spells may now be purchased.
  64. 9)  Warrior classes were  not able to attack when they progressed
  65.     to level 2.  This has been corrected.
  66. 10) Item names not repeated when equipping characters.
  67. 11) The Quit Game option in the Utilities menu is  more intuitive
  68.     now.
  69. 12) Isil Thania scenario has been repaired.
  70. 13) Stray animations  no longer  stay on the screen when no light
  71.     is on in a dungeon.
  72. 14) "Spell Cast" category now makes sense for BOWs and ARROWs.

  86. Version 1.2 of BTCS features the following improvements:
  87. --------------------------------------------------------
  88. 1)  BARDGAME will now play a random song while in the guild.
  89. 2)  The SETUP.EXE had problems with some invalid keystrokes. This
  90.     has been corrected.
  91. 3)  The Utilities screen now offers the option to print a list of
  92.     Items and Monsters, as well as a Map/Special printing option.
  93. 4)  If the first line of a special is a DRAW PICTURE command, the
  94.     game will not  display the  3D view  prior to displaying your
  95.     picture.
  96. 5)  BARDGAME can now display custom title pages.  A graphic named
  97.     USRSCR.LBM will  automatically be loaded as a titlepage  ( if
  98.     in the BTCS directory ). There is also a hook for a titlepage
  99.     saved  under a  different  name.   To  load  a graphic with a
  100.     different name type BARDGAME -T XXXXXX.LBM,  where XXXXXX.LBM
  101.     is the name of the file to be loaded.
  102. 6)  The game uses a new  map file format which will be 10% to 70%
  103.     smaller than previous versions.  The new BTCS program will be
  104.     able to work with the older map format.

  106. 7)  There are now  two special  functions  associated with taking
  107.     gold from a party.   The first is a test to determine if gold
  108.     can be taken ( returning a TRUE or FALSE result ).  The other
  109.     will take a specified amount of gold from the party.
  110. 8)  Spells can now do dammage which is  proportional to the level
  111.     of the caster ( XdX per level ).
  112. 9)  If  a character in the  party is  poisoned,  the game will no
  113.     longer print Poison messages after each action.
  114. 10) The game will now indicate if a character is Poisoned,  Aged,
  115.     Stoned, etc., when viewing the characters statistics.
  116. 11) Two  time related  functions have  been  added to the Special
  117.     Editor.   The  first  will perform  a special in  a specified
  118.     number of  minutes.    A time of  0 minutes  will trigger the
  119.     special immediately.  A timed special can only be canceled by
  120.     leaving the  map,  or by  the second  time related  function,
  121.     Cancel Time Special.
  122. 12) The special editor now has a GOTO LINE # command.
  123. 13) BTCS now features protection  flags which will alert the user
  124.     if data has not been saved when the Quit BTCS option has been
  125.     selected.

  137. Version 1.3 of BTCS features the following improvements:
  138. --------------------------------------------------------
  139. 1)  The game utilizes a new sound driver.   The driver now checks
  140.     the BLASTER environment variable  (  set within your AUTOEXEC
  141.     batch file ) for IRQ, DMA, and I/O Address settings.
  142. 2)  When  reviewing lists,  the game no longer  highlights old list
  143.     selections ( thus highlighting two selections at once )
  144. 3)  Through certain  key combinations,  it was possible to select
  145.     the message "Select One" while viewing a list.  This has been
  146.     corrected.
  147. 4)  The GOTO special option previously accepted line numbers from
  148.     1 to 32000 ( numbers 21 and over equaling 20 ). The option is
  149.     now limited to lines 1 through 20.
  150. 5)  While editing  items,  negative values  ( up to -15 )  may be
  151.     entered for To Hit and A/C bonus catagories.
  152. 6)  A new  special  has  been added  which allows you to subtract
  153.     from the counter.
  154. 7)  There is a new teleport function in the Special Editor called
  155.     Teleport Relative.  E.g.- Teleport 3 squares North and 2
  156.     squares east of there the party is standing.
  157. 8)  Another teleport function has been added which will Teleport
  158.     and then activate a special at the destination.
